Fun Ways to Use Background Dies

March 30, 2018

Hello friends, happy Friday!

This month we’re focusing on using our favorite Hero Arts products, and so today I’m using one of my favorite Hero Arts products – their background dies. I took one of their newest background dies, and tried to use it as many ways as I could think of. Background dies are amazing but it can sometimes be hard to figure out how to use a background die, so let’s look at just some of the options.

First, let’s look at a 2 cards for 1 option, using the hearts infinity die set (another great product!) to cut out the background die to give some new shapes to the background. I did some watercolor on watercolor paper, then die cut using the background die, and then cut out the heart. I used the positive and negative pieces to make the following cards!

And then, to use the whole background die, you can use a more subtle color, and then use another image as a focal point.

And if you want to be super subtle, you can use it for a white on white background, and give some interest to a mostly white background.

And then, to break up the intense-ness of background dies, you can cut it up to get some white space in between. This one, I cut in the middle, and added some glitter paper and Nuvo Drops in the white space.

And then I played with some patterned paper, and it turned out really great! I would definitely recommend this die with patterned paper if you have any scraps you’d like to use.

I hope these inspired you on how to use background dies, and also for thinking about your favorite Hero Arts Products!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

xoxo

Thank You Hugs

March 27, 2018

Ericka here and I hope you had a wonderful week and have some fun planned for the weekend. Have you a chance to play along with our challenge this month? If not, hopefully this post will inspire you to take out your favorite Hero Arts products and play along with us.

I love Hero Arts because there are so many great products and today I’m using the new liquid watercolors, a HA stencils, and the some awesome dies included in the March Monthly Hero Kit.

I love working with the HA liquid watercolors and for this post I thought I would take out some stencils and texture paste.

For both cards, I mixed a couple of drops of the Pine and Indigo Liquid Watercolors into some texture paste. I used the same HA stencil and applied the colored texture paste to Bristol Smooth paper. Once they were dry, I used a blending brush with some distress ink in Salty Ocean and Chipped Sapphire to help the stencil pop. I love this stencil image and decided to doodle on both of them in order to give it more of a Scandinavian look.

For the card, I used silver and white gel pens to doodle on and around the stencil. I then cut away part of the stencil and applied it to a light blue card base with distress ink blended on it with some foam tape. The fancy shape dies included in the Hero Arts Monthly kit are becoming a new favorite! They are both scripty and delicate and die cut super easy. I die cut the thank you several times to give it some dimension and then added a little sparkle pen for some shine.

For my second card, I did similar doodles but this time in gold and white pens. I die cut the panel with a stitched rectangle and adhered it to a blue card base with some foam tape. I die cut the Hugs die (also included in the March Kit) several times on white card stock and then colored the top with the same gold pen. Here is a close up of the doodling I added as well as these gorgeous sentiment dies!

Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful weekend!

Going Green in March!

March 24, 2018

Happy Saturday! Kim with you this morning sharing more of my newer Hero Arts favorites! Our new challenge started on March 15 and it’s all about your favorites! All of the products used are listed at the end of my post!

To start with green is my favorite color, and Hero Arts Fresh Lawn is my favorite green among the entire selection. So I decided to use this gorgeous color with the new Every Which Way stencil. Once I was done with my blending on top of the stencil, I went over the entire panel with a light hand and the same ink. I die cut the panel using the new (my new staple dies) Rounded Rectangle dies.

I placed my panel in the Misti to stamp the hugs from the new Hand Drawn Every Day messages in Hero Arts Black die ink. I also die cut my Paper Layering Feather (love this die) and placed it over the centre of my panel and inked again. I wanted to add foam tape and have the sentiment be seamless on both. I added a little black marker over the sides of the feather where the sentiment was stamped to ensure that there were no white areas. One that was done, I took my stencil and placed it back on top of the panel and added embossing ink, I then used Hero Arts Sparkle Embossing powder to give a light glitter effect. It looks beautiful in real life you can see it slightly in the first picture.

Once that was done, I die cut a piece of black paper from the Midnight Mixed Layering papers to back the panel. I also embossed the sending sentiment also from the Hand Drawn Everyday Messages using Hero Arts White Detail embossing powder and added my feather and smaller sentiment on the base panel. I put my panel on top of a card base cut from Snow Layering Paper and added some clear sequins from the Champagne sequin mix and some Nuvo drops.

Thanks so much for taking the time!

Kim

Single Background Stamp but Lots of Variety

March 21, 2018

My, my, my! How can I select just one? My favorite Hero Arts product?! Oye! It was so hard to decide.

As of today (you know it will change as soon as the next release comes out!), the Floral Mandala Bold Print background stamp is currently my favorite product. This is such a diverse stamp. This stamp can be used as a subtle background, inked up in a bold way, used as a flower, colored, watercolored and on and on.

Due to my work travel schedule this month and the fact that I am a mom first and foremost, I was unable to complete a process video. But! I did create a detailed overview video of each card design. To view it, head over to my blog.

[All supplies are listed below, with thumbnails, and use affiliated links when possible. Affiliated links may be used at no cost to you.]

Starting with Bristol Smooth White Cardstock, I stamped the image, slightly off center, in Versafine ink and covered the sticky surface with white embossing powder. I heat set the powder and used an ink blending tool to apply Faded Jeans and Evergreen Bough distress oxide inks. When the blending was complete, I used a clean, dry cloth to wipe off the excess and let the white embossing powder stand out.

To finish the card I stacked 3 die cuts of the sentiment from the Thanks Stamp and Die set in black cardstock. The sentiment was adhered to the top of a vellum strip and the letters were covered in both shimmer pen and glossy accents for shine. The silver star sequins were from my stash. The final panel was attached to a 4×4 top folding notecard.

I find I do not use craft colored cardstock enough in my cardmaking. This card uses Neenah Desert Storm cardstock as the base. The stamp was inked using Versamark ink and coated in white embossing powder. After the powder was heat set, I used my Prisma Color Pencils to color from the center of the image out in rainbow color order.

To complete the card, I used a sentiment from the You are Loved Messages stamp set. On a piece of vellum, I stamped the sentiment in black Versafine ink, and used clear embossing powder to heat set it. I adhered it to my top folding notecard and added some confetti sequins for interest and shine.

To achieve the look in this next card, I inked up my stamp multiple times using 4 different colors of ink; Ultra Pink, Raspberry Jam, Grape Juice and Passion Flower. Using my Misti, the top portion of the stamp was first inked with Ultra Pink. On Neenah Solar White cardstock, I stamped the image. Moving a bit further down on the stamp, I inked up with Raspberry Jam. Where the two ink colors intersected, I used a dry cloth to dab away some of the Raspberry Jam on the stamp so there was not a harsh line. I continued to work my way down the stamp and repeat the process with the Grape Juice and Passion Flower inks.

Once the inked panel was complete, I used Shimmer Mist to cover the entire panel (sorry it did not photograph well – check out the video for all the sparkle). Three die cut sentiments from the Hello Stamp and Die set were stacked on top of each other and adhered to a heart cut from vellum using the Infinity Heart die set. Over the top of the sentiment, I used a shimmer pen for sparkle and glossy accents for dimension. From my stash, I used some clear sequins and adhered the entire panel with craft foam to a top folding white notecard.

This background was created by stamping the image in Versafine ink on Strathmore Watercolor Paper. I prefer the textured side of the paper as I think it adds interest to the finished product. The entire image was covered with white embossing powder and heat set. Using my Gansai watercolors, I used an orange wash, heat set it and then added a dark blue over the top. Each color was mixed with Perfect Pearls to add a depth of shimmer that is just spectacular in person.

Again, I used a vellum heart die cut from the Infinity Heart die set and a 3 stacked sentiments cut from the Thanks Stamp and Die set. Before I added the heart to the watercolored panel, I stamped a sub-sentiment (and white heat embossed it) and adhered the die cut sentiment above it. The sentiment was covered with a shimmer pen and I used confetti sequins scattered about the panel. Everything was adhered with a piece of craft foam between the panel and a top folding white notecard.

I saved my favorite for last! Here, I started with a white panel and used the Spiral Stencil to make an impression on the paper. On a piece of vellum, I stamped the background stamp in Versamark ink and used gold embossing powder to heat set the image. I did this twice so I ended up with 2 images. This allowed me to cut various petal shapes to start building my flower. To color the images I used Spectrum Noir shimmer pens in Macaroon and Harvest Moon. The shimmer from the embossing powder and pens is amazing in real life.

The embossed panel was adhered to a top folding notecard. Each layer of the flower was adhered with foam tape to give it some dimension. The sentiment was gold heat embossed from the Support Prayers Love stamp set. The entire look was finished with gold sequins.

Phew! That is it! Thank you for stopping by and please tell me your favorite Hero Arts product below in the comments – or better yet, create a project using it and submit it to this month’s challenge!

You Are Beautiful

March 18, 2018

I hope you’re having a beautiful day!  I love that the weather is finally getting warmer, the sun is shining and I’m starting to hear birds in the morning again.  I try to walk my dog, Miss Moriko, every day and while we’re out and about I’m looking around and noticing all the subtle changes of the season.   When the weather is fine you’ll find me out in the garden pulling or planting, or just enjoying a tall glass of iced tea.   When it’s cold or rainy I’m indoors playing in my craft studio – my sweet escape to stamped gardens of florals and far away places.  I can make it any season I like!  LOL!

Today I’m playing with the Hero Arts Color Layering “Let Love Grow” stamp set.  This set includes lots of floral images that you can stamp individually, or layered to create more complex and dimensional flowers.

Whenever I am arranging floral stamps I find it best to stamp the images on scrap paper first.  I don’t want to stamp them on my expensive craft paper until I’m sure what will go where, and which colors work best together.   I roughly trim the images – no fussy cutting- just close enough to be able to arrange them where I like.

If you look close you will see that I arrange them on a piece of plastic that’s trimmed to the size of a card base (A2 4.25 x 5.5″).  This allows me to pick up the entire arrangement and place it on different colored backgrounds or pattern paper – maybe a die cut frame.. LOL!   You get the idea!  It keeps all the images together!

When I was happy with the arrangement I got inky!  I used lots of different colors of Hero Arts inks (see the long list below!)  and had fun stamping!

I used a circle of dots stamp image that are meant to be a flower center to create a pattern in the background in Soft Pool ink.

Did I mention that the Color Layering Stamps are my favorites?  What are your favorite Hero Arts products?  Stamps, stencils, die cuts?  It’s time to get them out and join us in our monthly challenge! The theme this time is to “Use Your Favorite Hero Arts Product”  so no excuses!    I can’t wait to see what you make!
